Insemination (IUI)

Insemination is often abbreviated to IUI, which means intra uterine insemination.

Insemination is used if the man has a slightly reduced sperm quality, if the woman has irregular ovulation, and/or if the cause of infertility is unexplained.

For many couples insemination means that they do not have to go through an in vitro fertilisation. The chance of achieving pregnancy at insemination is approx. 15 per cent per treatment.

Insemination is a painless treatment, which, in short, involves that the cleaned up sperm cells are sprayed into the uterus on the time of ovulation. The probability of pregnancy is increased at insemination, because we make sure that the sperm cells are sprayed directly into the uterus on the very right time. In other words, we help the sperm cells on their way, as some sperm cells might have difficulties finding the way to the uterine tubes. Insemination is perfomed with a thin plastic catheter through the vagina. The procedure is quick and in most cases without pain.

IUI

Insemination is performed with the husbands sperm cells, this is called IUIH, or with donor sperm cells, this is called IUID. Donor sperm cells are used when the mans sperm quality is very poor, or if he does not produce any sperm cells at all.


The preconditions for insemination

Treatment with insemination implies that:

  • The woman has ovulation, either by herself or through medication.
  • The woman has a normal passage through uterus.
  • The woman has been examined for chlamydia, German measles, and carcinomatous cells in the internal female organs.
  • The couple has been examined for contagious or hereditable diseases.
  • The mans semen must contain a sufficient quantity of suitable sperm cells for the treatment.

For the treatment to succeed it is important that the uterine tubes and the uterus have a normal function. The passage through the uterine tubes must be free. The uterine tubes must be able to catch the egg after the ovulation and they must be able to transport the fertilised egg to the uterus, where it must adhere and develop into a baby. Insemination step by step:

Below you can see what happens throughout the treatment, in short terms:

1. Preliminary consultation with the doctor

Here we make sure that you are well informed about your treatment.

2. Examination for infertility

The couple is examined for causes of infertility.

3. Mild hormone stimulation

The woman gets a mild hormone stimulation to regulate the egg production and the time of ovulation.

4. Ultrasound scan of the follicles

To determine the right time for insemination.

5. Ovulation test / ovulation injection

Secure that the ovulation and the insemination take place on the exact same time.

6. Insemination with the husbands sperm cells at IUIH or with donor sperm cells at IUID.

Is normally performed on two successive days to increase the probability of pregnancy.

7. Pregnancy test.


About donor sperm cells

Donor is always anonymous, the anonymity works both ways, and neither you nor we can ever get information about the name of the donor. The laboratory technician on the basis of the man's eye colour, hair colour, weight, height, and race selects the donor.

To be approved as a sperm cell donor you must not have any special physical indications or have a predisposition to serious hereditable diseases.

The sperm cells are bought at Cryobank. Cryos freezes the sperm cells for at least 6 months before we are allowed to use them. During this period the donor are continuously examined for venereal diseases, including HIV.
